Feng Shui is About Harmony & Balance

While it may be tempting to make your relationship corner completely pink, don't overwhelm one area without balancing the other spaces in your home's Bagua.

While it may be tempting to make your love corner completely pink or your wealth corner completely purple, don’t overwhelm one area without balancing the other spaces in your home’s Bagua.

“I’ve turned my entire relationship corner pink and I still haven’t found love.”

This is a pretty typical of emails I get from people inquiring about Feng Shui consultations.

Whether you want to improve your health, wealth, fame, career, fertility, relationships or love, keep this in mind: harmony and balance.

Harmony and balance shouldn’t just be your desired outcome.

Harmony and balance are also required in Feng Shui placement and decor in order to get what you want.

The Purple House
The following pictures are from a home that was recently listed for sale in Middlesex, England.

For soon-to-be obvious reasons, the listing agent neglected to say much about the interior.

While the home was attractive from the outside, every room inside was completely purple.

Purple is certainly a color of royalty and wealth.  And I’m not saying that I don’t like purple.

But this… is overboard.

Residents of homes like this don’t experience an abundance of money while living there.

And people certainly don’t sell homes like this at a premium, especially when you factor in the costs of the decor.  (Though, this one received enough viral coverage that someone with a purple predilection may have spent too much money just to have it.)

Moreover, residents in over-the-top homes like this usually have career, health, relationship and marital issues.

Harmony and Balance
As I said, you need harmony and balance in your home’s decor and placement in order to have harmony and balance in your life.  But how?

Home Bagua Overlay

Most ideal would be to spend careful time in each area of the Feng Shui Bagua to ensure proper and steady flow of Chi, or Feng Shui energy.

At the very least, start by ensuring that opposing corners or sides of your home’s Bagua are balanced.

As you see results from the opposing areas, move onto another pair of opposing areas.

All the while, be sure to pay special attention to the Career & Life Path Area of your home by your front door by making sure that it is clear and clean to attract Chi into your home.

Remember, don’t go all purple on me!

Valentine’s Day Feng Shui

Love is in the air… or is it?

Feng Shui Love / Relationships / Marriage -Umbrella

Are you still looking for true love this Valentine’s Day?

If you have been looking and have yet to find “the one,” don’t fret.  There are several things you can do around your home to attract that special someone.

Visualize
First off, close your eyes and take at least five minutes to imagine what your life would be like if you had the man or woman of your dreams as your partner.

Think of what you want your life to be like with this person, not what you think you need to give up or who you need to be in order to have just anyone in your life.

Let your mind go crazy and when you are done, write down the senses that you can remember. How does being in that relationship feel, look, taste and smell? Jot down colors, scents, flavors, etc.

Now jot down the things you remember doing together in your daydream and your moods during those activities.

Emulate
Now, using what you imagined, start to plan out changes in your home to remind you of that perfect relationship.

Bring out the senses to reflect the energy that you are looking for.

The point here is to use your senses to frequently bring you back to the way your dream relationship made you feel.

For instance, if you saw yourself on horseback, riding with your ideal partner, plan to find artwork of a couple of horses (always ensure the art includes the full bodies of the horses).

Feng Shui Health - Meditation

If you saw yourself meditating by the beach, plan on finding such artwork.

If you smelled roses, plan to get some pure rose essential oil or organic scented candles to match.

Before you implement any of the above, you need some guidelines.

Pair Off
Make sure to eliminate lonely items. I can’t harp on this enough.

To continue with the above example, make sure you have a couple riding on a pair of horses rather than a lonely person riding a horse. Just as important, make sure that there aren’t three people on horses (unless you want a third wheel in your relationship).

Feng Shui Love / Relationships / Marriage -Bed

Also, make sure you have two sleeping pillows on your bed and two sets of towels hanging in the bathroom. You get the idea.

If I inspect your home, I don’t want to see a lonely ballerina statue or a single man standing on a wave-beaten lighthouse.

Let Your Love Flow
Chi is an energy that must be given room to flow. As such, make sure your Love Corner and all other areas of your home are clean and organized.

Make Room
Even if you aren’t with someone right now, make room for someone special in your life. Is there enough closet space for them? How about room in the medicine cabinet?

Let’s get more granular. Do you still have evidence of prior relationships? Pictures, love notes, coffee mugs… anything that reminds you of your exes? If feasible, get rid of them. As long as you hold onto these objects, you don’t make room in your heart for someone new.

If you can’t seem to let go of a prior relationship, a Feng Shui Space Clearing may be required.

Implement
Now it is time to implement the things you wrote down about your dream. Using guidelines from the various sections of the Feng Shui Bagua, implement these items throughout your house.

Feng Shui Love / Relationships / Marriage -Heart

As an example, the colors and elements from the Health Area should not look like a bottle of Pepto Bismol exploded pink everywhere. Likewise, if you need to put the picture of the couple on horseback in your Family Area, it would be best served with a green wooden frame. Further, you would want to have any scented candles in your Fame & Reputation Area or your Love Corner instead of your Career Area.

Love Corner
Make sure all of the areas of your Feng Shui Bagua are setup correctly, but also be sure to focus some time reviewing my Love Corner page. There are several additional tips and points that are specific to this area of your home and your bedroom.

Final Thoughts
Be honest with yourself and with others.  Love who you are and be proud of it!

Do not try to be what you are not. Tell the world exactly what you are looking for and the world will be more likely to give you exactly what you want.

Feng Shui Love / Relationships / Marriage -Couple

Who knows… that perfect someone who loves horseback riding and has a greenhouse full of orchids may be at your next house party. How will they ever know that you are looking for them unless you advertise with a detailed description?

Next Steps
It wouldn’t hurt to display your dream at work, too.  You never know who might walk past your desk!

If you are having trouble, a professional space-clearing may be needed to get your home’s energy moving again.

Paint Your Future with Feng Shui

Feng Shui FamilyLook around your home and see what kind of artwork you have.

Do you see beautiful pictures of Spring, your ideal travel location or a picture of a happy couple or loving family?

These are the types of artwork you should see around your home.

Past, Present and Your Future

I come across a lot of clients with pieces of art that mean so much to them because it reminds them of the old times or the struggles they overcame, such as a weathered pier on a placid lake or a lonely country road.

Artwork may speak to the past, but do you really want to be stuck in the past?

A Hazy Shade of Winter

When on consultations, I also often see paintings of wintery, desolate landscapes or colorful Fall foliage.

I usually end up advising them to change out those paintings with beautiful Spring and Summer artwork.

Why? That’s when things are alive and growing!

You want your life to blossom and grow.

In Fall and Winter, on the other hand, most things are at the end of their seasonal lifecycles. Leaves turn and fall while plants wither and die.

Why would you want your home’s energy to be dying?

All the Single Ladies

iStock_000016384549XSmall-300x214I also see a lot of paintings of a beautiful and strong single woman, because many of my clients want to be like her.

Then again, these are typically also the clients who tell me they are looking for happiness and love. When I look around their house and especially at their artwork, however, all I see is the evidence of a lonely person.

If you would like to be in a happy relationship, then find the artwork that really speaks to happy relationships.

Find a painting of two people sitting together sharing a glass of wine, or a couple tango dancing or two people holding hands jumping off a plane together. Okay… maybe not that last one; but you get the idea!

Get Out of the Blue Period

Feng Shui ColorsThe types of artwork I recommend may not speak to your personality.

But, if you want to bring in good, active, creative energy, please stay away from all black and white pictures or paintings from sad, tormented artists.

Yes, artwork from those who cut off their ear or met their end at an early age might be worth big bucks. But, the only time they will be bringing in money for you is when you sell them.

While you hold onto such artwork, they will likely only drain energy from you and your home.

Next Steps

Surround yourself with art that defines something new and beautiful for you.  Don’t forget that the same holds true for your office as your home.

Paint your home with the future of your dreams. Consider this the first step in turning your dreams into your reality.

De-Clutter Your Friends

Virtual Feng Shui Consultationsfriend (noun) \ˈfrend\
1: a person connected to another by a mutual bond of affection or esteem
2: a person that is not hostile

In this day of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google+, take a look at how many “friends” you have in your social networks.

Be honest – are they truly your friends? How many of them do you actually enjoy spending time with vs. how many are simply acquaintances?

Eliminate Negativity

Now take a look at your updates or news feeds. Do any of your “friends” post consistently negative comments? Would you avoid them if you saw them in a public place?

Feng Shui ClutterYou will always hear me talking about eliminating the clutter in your space. Now get rid of the clutter on MySpace (or Facebook, Twitter, or anywhere else you spend your time).

That’s right. Unsubscribe from the feeds or even un-friend those that do not provide you with positive energy.

Why let others fill your thoughts with negative complaints and anger? This only weighs you down emotionally!

Add Positivity

And don’t think that I’m suggesting you only do this on social networks. Find friends online and in real life that are truly friends – people who will lift you up and with whom you will have a mutual bond of affection or esteem.

Haven’t met any yet? Subscribe to the feeds of others with truly inspiring messages filled with positive energy.

Dalai LamaFor example, you may want to subscribe to the news feeds of Tony Robbins, Nick Vujicic, Oprah Winfrey or the Dalai Lama. And be sure to subscribe to mine, while you’re at it!

I can assure you that if you surround yourself with only uplifting people, you will have positive energy and you will only be attracted to more uplifting people in the future.

Public Service Announcement

If you are the person that likes to share every bad thing that happened in your day or you complain about everything to everyone: STOP!

You are reading my blog because you want to improve your life. Perhaps you have already cleaned out your house to welcome in good energy. Now you need to BE that good energy as well.

Oprah once said, “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.”

I would like to add, “Be that person who will lift others around you.”

Next Steps

Leave a comment to publicly announce how you will surround yourself with positive people and be sure to read about the Helpful People & Relationships corners of your home.

Clearing Out the Bed Feng Shui

Feng Shui Love / Relationships / Marriage -HeartSomeone forwarded me a hilarious Craigslist ad of a woman selling her mattress because she no longer wanted to sleep on the bed that she and her cheating ex-boyfriend used to share.

At first I simply enjoyed the ad because of the humor in the write-up.

Then I realized how, intentional-or-not, the person who posted the ad was practicing Feng Shui.

Feng Shui Space Clearing
By disposing of the old mattress, she was cleaning out bad relationship energy.

The seller was clearing a road for new a relationship to come into her life (hopefully someone more caring and faithful then her ex).

I’m not saying that everyone getting out of a relationship should dispose of their old mattress every time they break up with someone. The sheets, yes. Mattress? Probably not.

Advertise Availability
If you are ready to move on from a relationship, you need to make it known to the energy around you that you have cleared the space for someone new.

If you find yourself in this situation, let me ask you something: Do you still have a shoe box full of items from your previous relationships? Perhaps pictures, ticket stubs, dried out roses, love notes…?

Feng Shui Love / Relationships / Marriage -CoupleMove On
These things are holding you back emotionally from moving forward to meet that special someone who is right for you. When you hold onto them, they remind you of the past.

Instead, you should be looking forward to a new and better relationship to come.

This goes for everything in our lives, but especially for finding that special someone.

When you are ready to move on and ready to welcome someone special in your life, create some space for them… in your home and in your heart.

Just make sure you have a bed to sleep in after you’ve created the space!

I wish you and the Craigslist seller the best of luck in releasing yourselves from past experiences and moving toward brighter futures.

Designing Homes the Feng Shui Way

Designing Homes the Feng Shui WayAs a Feng Shui consultant to several home builders, I always take an interest in seeing what others say about Feng Shui as it pertains to homes.

The Times of India has an article with some very basic elements talking about how homes should be built, including the following (with my comments):

Main Door: The main door should be larger than any other door in the house and its directional position is important.  I would like to add that the house should be designed in such a way that the front door can be used the most regularly as the main entryway.  For a healthy Career & Life Path Area of your home, be sure to use your front door!

Kitchen: The article points out that there needs to be a balancing act between the various elements found in a kitchen (metal from utensils, fire from the stove, water from the sink, etc.).  Placement is important so that these items work in a creative cycle for energy rather than a destructive cycle.  See some of my tips for the kitchen here and here.

Master Bedroom: Though the article largely discusses furniture here, it correctly points out that the location of the master bedroom is very important, though it does not elaborate.  While having the master bedroom in the Love & Relationship Corner, I would contend that it is most important that no part of this room extends outside of the home as defined by the front door.

Toilets: The article correctly points out that toilets only relatively recently made their way indoors.  It is widely believed in Feng Shui that toilets will suck the Feng Shui energy, or Chi, right out of your home.  Getting rid of the toilet just isn’t practical in modern society, but make sure not to have them in dangerous places and use some tricks to slow the drain.
