Too Much Feng Shui? 5 Tips to Avoid Feng Shui Overload

Feng shui is a great tool for adding harmony to your space, but is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Can you have too much feng shui?

The quick answer is yes, you can have too much feng shui, just like you can over-fertilize or over-water a plant (okay, I’m guilty of that). Believe me, I have had several first consultations with clients whose homes looked less like a well-balanced home and more like a Chinese restaurant with tons of meaningless trinkets. Let’s avoid that, shall we?

Here are five tips that I recommend to avoid feng shui overload in your space:

  1. Follow the 80/20 rule. In feng shui, it’s important to have a balance of yin and yang energy in your space. 80% of your space should be yin (calming, soothing, relaxing) and 20% should be yang (energizing, vibrant, stimulating).
  2. Don’t overdo it with the Five Elements. In feng shui, the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal & water) are an important tool for creating harmony. But don’t go overboard with them, as too much of any one element can create imbalance. Instead, try to decorate with a balance of the Five Elements in your space.
  3. Use feng shui to enhance your space — not change it. Instead of trying to change your space to fit the principles of feng shui, use it to enhance your space and bring harmony to it. You probably don’t need to knock down walls or literally change the direction of your home by the compass (seriously, some people do this — and they’re still miserable).
  4. Don’t try to implement every feng shui tip you come across. There are many different feng shui techniques out there, and I know it can be tempting to try to implement as many as possible to improve your life. Instead, choose a few key feng shui techniques that resonate with you for your space. I compare this to trying to take a trip from Los Angeles to New York. There are lots of forms of transportation to get there (planes, trains, car) and even more routes for each to take along the way. Find a good, simple plan and stick with it. Don’t make it look like you’re zig-zagging along your route!
  5. Trust your instincts. You need to believe that what you’re implementing in your space is right for you. If something doesn’t feel right, chances are it’s not going to work for you. Feng shui, if applied correctly, makes logical sense. If you don’t understand why you’re implementing each technique you’re using, let’s talk about it first.

While feng shui is powerful, certainly try not to over do it, especially if it doesn’t fit your style. I also have a funny video that I put out a few years ago that similarly goes through this concept.

The Power of Positive Relationships: How Friends and Family Impact Our Lives through Feng Shui

Do you feel like those around you are supportive to your well-being? Feng shui can help you attract and maintain positive relationships with your friends and family.

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice of creating harmony and balance in your surroundings, and we can use it to maximize your relationships with friends and family.

When you enter your home from the front door, there are three areas we need to look at: The Love & Relationship Corner, the Family Area, and the Helpful People Corner.

The Love & Relationships Corner is the back-right of your home. This area is believed to have an impact on your romantic and social connections. To enhance the energy in this area, be sure to place objects like throw pillows, bedside tables and towels in pairs – even if you are currently single. Try to use symbols that represent love to you in order to attract positive energy and good relationships.

The Family Area is the left side of your home. This area represents the support and guidance that you receive from your loved ones. To enhance the energy in this area, be sure to add your family photos and family trees (except on top of a fireplace). Whatever you add here should promote a sense of togetherness and support in your home.

The Helpful People Corner is the front-right of your home. This area represents the energy that attracts and nourishes new friends and work associates. Add objects and pictures that remind you of the types of people you want to attract into your life.

Focus your energy on attracting and cultivating people around you that help you feel good about your life. I’ve recommended in a previous blog post that you occasionally declutter your friends. Unfriend and block, if you will, the contacts in your life that emotionally and physically drain you.

Friends and family play a vital role in your life. They’re important to your emotional well-being. Incorporate feng shui principles into your home so you can attract positive energy in your relationships. Remember that a strong support system is key to living a happy and fulfilled life.

Expanding Your Luck: How to Increase Your Surface Area for Good Fortune with Feng Shui

Feng shui, the ancient Chinese practice of creating harmony and balance in your surroundings, can also be used to attract good luck and prosperity. When I work with my clients, I like to say that a goal of feng shui is to increase their “surface area” for luck. That is, they can purposefully create more possibilities for positive opportunities to flow into their lives.

I really like that phrase: “increase your surface area for luck.” It reminds me that not everything is dependent upon hard work – but we also can’t leave everything up to chance. Instead, we need to apply effort towards the areas in our lives that will most increase our chances for luck.

The best way to increase your surface area for luck is by keeping your environment clean and clutter-free. Clutter blocks the flow of lucky energy in your home. By contrast, when you keep your home organized, you feel organized and accomplished. You’re also creating more space for positive energy to flow in. Have you ever been invited into someone’s car or home that was incredibly cluttered? At first glance, would you trust them with an important area of your life, like being your bookkeeper or managing your business? If you have clutter all around you, take a moment to think about how it impacts the perception that others might have of you. Is your clutter potentially preventing you from getting opportunities for good fortune?

Another way to increase your surface area for luck is by adding symbols of good fortune to your home. For example, you can place a money tree in your home, which some interpret as a symbol of abundance. Such symbols act as a reminder of your goals so you can attract positive energy to your home. Frankly, regardless the symbol, it needs to be something that YOU subconsciously believe is a sign of good fortune that will encourage you to take additional small steps every day to achieve your goals. I personally love and highly recommend vision boards for this reason.

In feng shui, the front door is considered to be the “mouth of chi.” It’s truly the main entrance for positive energy to enter your home. By keeping your front door clean and well-maintained (good fit, no squeaks, etc.), you’re creating a positive first impression, which invites in good luck. Placing a wind chime here might enhance the flow of positive energy, but it will certainly also remind you of your goals each time you hear it chime in the wind.

Choosing the right colors for the appropriate areas of your home can also increase your surface area for luck. Different colors are associated with different meanings and energies in feng shui and psychology. For example, red is associated with good luck and good reputation, while blue is associated with tranquility and peace. When you add these colors to your home decor, you can attract positive energy to enhance the flow of luck. Be sure to follow the feng shui bagua to learn about proper placement of these colors.

Increasing your surface area for luck is an important aspect of feng shui. By keeping your environment clutter-free, adding symbols of good fortune, keeping a positive first impression with your front door, and using the right colors, you can attract good luck in your life. Remember, the key to success in feng shui is to create balance and harmony in your surroundings.

10 Simple Feng Shui Tips for Attracting Positive Energy to Your Home

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy that focuses on the balance and flow of energy, or qi, in a space. When I work with home builders, I always work with them to ensure that this energy flows freely through their communities, but it is ultimately up to you to take it from there. By aligning the energy in your home with the principles of feng shui, you can create a harmonious and positive environment. Here are 10 simple feng shui tips to help you attract positive energy to your home:

  1. Declutter regularly: Clutter can block the flow of positive energy in your home. Make an effort to declutter regularly and get rid of items you no longer use or need.
  2. Bring in natural light: Natural light is a source of positive energy, so try to let as much of it into your home as possible. Open your curtains and blinds during the day, and consider adding skylights or windows to help brighten up dark rooms.
  3. Incorporate plants: Plants are a natural source of positive energy and can help purify the air in your home. Consider adding a few houseplants to your space to bring in some extra positive vibes.
  4. Choose colors wisely: Different colors can have different effects on the energy in a space. Soft, neutral colors are calming and can create a sense of peace, while bright colors can bring energy and vibrancy. Choose colors that reflect the energy you want to cultivate in your home.
  5. Hang mirrors strategically: Mirrors can help amplify and reflect positive energy, so consider hanging them in areas where you want to increase the flow of qi. Avoid hanging mirrors opposite doors, as they can reflect negative energy back into the space.
  6. Display meaningful artwork: Art has the power to transform a space and bring positive energy. Choose artwork that has personal meaning to you and display it prominently in your home.
  7. Keep the front entrance clear: The front entrance of your home is the first thing people see when they arrive and is an important area for the flow of qi. Keep it clear of clutter and make sure the space is well-lit and welcoming.
  8. Choose comfortable furniture: Furniture that is comfortable and inviting can help create a positive and welcoming atmosphere in your home. Avoid sharp edges and choose pieces that are soft and comfortable to sit on.
  9. Create a peaceful bedroom: The bedroom is a place for rest and relaxation, so it’s important to create a peaceful and calming atmosphere. Choose soothing colors, eliminate clutter, and add comfortable bedding and pillows to encourage a good night’s sleep.
  10. Incorporate water elements: Water is a symbol of prosperity and abundance in feng shui, so consider adding a water feature like a fountain or aquarium to your home. Just be sure to place it in an area that won’t disturb your sleep.

By following these simple feng shui tips, you can create a home that is full of positive energy and harmony. Remember to keep an open mind and have fun with it – the most important thing is to create a space that feels good to you.
