5 Feng Shui Tips to Invigorate Your Space Today

Do you love being home? Oftentimes, our homes are a reflection of who we are, but not many people realize that your surroundings can affect your energy, your mood, and even your luck.

Feng Shui is a system of harmonizing with your surroundings. Rather than relying solely on style, Feng Shui focuses on matching your home with your intentions. It’s all about giving a positive energy boost to you and the areas where you spend most of your time.

Here are five easy and effective tips to breathe new life into your space and help you feel fresh and energetic at home.

1. Have a Clear Purpose
Know what you want from life. See it, feel it, and know that it will come to be with a little hard work. Being completely open to what the universe has in store for you and seeing everything as a potential opportunity for personal success is key to achieving positive chi or energy in your home or personal space. Positive energy flow is what Feng Shui is all about.

2. Amplify the Call of Nature
The English translation for Feng Shui is “wind and water” Open those blinds, shades, or curtains and look around you. Listen to the birds sing. Open your windows and breathe in the energy of Mother Nature. In Feng Shui, birds are powerful symbols of new opportunities, abundance and good luck, but that isn’t all. Birds also symbolize love and commitment. With all of these wonderful virtues, why not put a bird feeder or bath outside your window and invite their energy to join you? You can even find what birds you are drawn to and add photos or sculptures of them into your decor.

3. Bring the Outdoors In
Get your green thumbs ready because in Feng Shui, plants represent abundance and wealth. They symbolize growth and health, not to mention they’re beautiful to look at. Caring for and seeing them thrive is invigorating for us as well, and they reciprocate by breathing refreshing energy into our homes. They add moisture to the air and eat toxins. So don’t be afraid to bring some of the outdoors in!

4. Light Force
Have you ever felt energized when walking outdoors on a sunny day? This is because light is the strongest manifestation of energy and can help balance the flow of chi in any space. A dark space will have a lack of life force, while light will give you the positive energy boost you seek. So open up those blinds to let the sunshine in, invest in better, brighter lighting indoors and let the force be with you, always.

5. One Step at a Time
Are you ready to feel the benefits of Feng Shui all around you? It may seem overwhelming, but taking it week by week can make it so much easier. Make one small change each week. Bring in one element, like a plant or water fountain, to help the energy flow in your home. Additionally, things like decluttering your space can make a huge difference on how your home looks and how you feel. That clutter is bogging down your chi energy and your life.

Feng Shui Your Holiday Gift Giving

Who knew it was bad Feng Shui to give knives as a gift because it signaled cutting the relationship? Or that giving an empty wallet or handbag, even if they’re the latest designer must-haves, signals lack of wealth? Before you buy another thing, check these tips on how to Feng Shui your gift giving this holiday season.

Feng Shui Christmas Wallet with Money

If you’re going to give a wallet, handbag, pretty box or dish as a gift, put something in it such as cash or a picture of gold bricks or diamonds to bring prosperity to the recipient.

As for knives, they’re never a good idea as a gift. If you receive a gift of knives, you should immediately give a coin to the person who gave them to you so that you’re symbolically buying the gift and neutralizing its effects. I’ve seen and heard stories of relationships going sour after a gift of knives entered the picture.

Wind chimes make an excellent gift since they give off positive energy wherever they’re placed.

Live plants with rounded leaves in red pots symbolize prosperity and are a simple, economical and excellent gift to give for the holidays.

Avoid the temptation to give watches, even smart watches. Timepieces signal that time is running out and the recipient has a limited life span. That’s definitely not a message you want to convey.

Feng Shui Christmas Gold Purse

For a special friend or romantic partner, give precious stones, such as diamonds or sapphires, for health and longevity. After all, who doesn’t want a beautiful precious stone as a holiday gift? A more affordable gift that’s fun and powerful is a red box filled with coins or a red envelope filled with cash that the recipient can put under their bed to bring prosperity and wealth into the New Year.

When giving plants, stay away from spiky plants, roses that have not been de-thorned, or any plants that can ‘pierce’ the relationship. A rose with a smooth stem shows the relationship is friction free and is okay to give.

Good professional gifts include wine, which is a symbol of prosperity, or champagne, which is a symbol of celebration. Sweet fruits and desserts, which are symbols of a sweet life, also make excellent gifts.

No matter what holiday gift you’re giving, wrapping makes all the difference because the first impression sets the tone and influences the experience for the receiver. Red is a color of power & fame and gold symbolizes wealth & prosperity, so wrap gifts using paper and ribbon with those colors.

Even if the recipient knows nothing about Feng Shui, it shows them they’re important to you because you took the time to wrap their gift in beautiful, elegant colors. It shows respect.

And if you bought any of the gifts on the bad Feng Shui list, there’s always time to take them back and get something else. Happy shopping and happy holidays!

Feng Shui Your Holiday Table for Harmony This Season

For those who dread the arguments that tend to come with family holiday celebrations, know that it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are some tips on how to Feng Shui your home and holiday table for harmony and happiness this season.

When families or friends are visiting for an extended period over the holidays, it’s important not to give up your “power positions.”Feng Shui Christmas Dinner

Keeping your power positions enables you to keep your guests from overstaying their welcome or meddle in your business. The first step in keeping your power position is not giving up your master bedroom or any of the bedrooms that are at the back part of the house.

It might take creativity if the guest room is in the back of the house. If this is your situation, before guests arrive, try to swap out the guest room for the home office or set up an inviting area that can be used as a temporary guest room toward the front of the home so that guests will feel welcome and your power position will be protected.

When determining your holiday table setting, always seat the head of the household at the head of the table. It’s also important to use fancy china because you are gathering with family and friends who are your most prized “possessions,” and who should never be served on paper plates.

Also if possible, avoid decorating with furniture that has sharp corners pointing to where everyone is sitting. The best furniture items would be round or oval tables, which naturally do not have edges. In Feng Shui, if furniture corners point a straight path to someone, we envision poison arrows shooting out of those corners and creating bad energy. You definitely don’t want to seat family and friends in that path of bad energy. Also, make sure there are no heavy decorative items that are above people’s heads because those decorations create nervous energy and encourage heavy conversations to flow.

Put all these tips to use and watch your holiday become a lot more harmonious!

2016 is the year of the Fire Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac, or Lunar Calendar. The Chinese New Year doesn’t officially begin until February 8th this year, but that shouldn’t keep us from getting prepared right now!

2016 New Year Red Monkey

Mirrors in Feng Shui

Mirrors have a very interesting relationship with Feng Shui.  Of course, they’re great at making rooms seem more spacious and seem to amplify light.  In Feng Shui, they are a symbol of the water element and we can utilize their incredible ability to reflect virtually everything, including Feng Shui energy called Chi (or “Qi”).

Often used as a cure for a variety of Feng Shui challenges, mirrors are used to reflect and direct both positive and negative Chi energy however we see fit.

But, where do we want that energy to go?  Well, that all depends on the area of the home we’re trying to enhance.

Using Mirrors Outside

As I have highlighted in previous posts, certain types of mirrors can be used to deflect negative energy coming from a neighbor’s front door aligned with yours, used to deflect overwhelming energy at a T-intersection, and can deflect churning energy on a cul-de-sac or corner lot.

Place your convex Bagua mirror above your door on the interior wall facing toward the street. Yes, you won’t actually see the mirror.

Place your convex Bagua mirror above your door on the interior wall facing toward the street. Yes, you won’t actually see the mirror.

As a quick cure for any of the above, the best choice is to simply place a convex Bagua mirror above your front door facing the street (such that the reflection virtually goes through your wall).

Now, let’s discuss how we use mirrors at various locations inside the home.

Mirrors in the Bedroom

Never place a mirror where it will face a bed.  Think of a mirror as a magnifying glass that will amplify energy flow toward your body as you sleep.  One problem with this is that it causes restlessness.

Mirrors in Bedrooms are Bad Feng Shui

Worse, many of my clients that previously had mirrors facing their bed complained of pain such as headaches, leg aches or stomach cramps — which had been exactly where their mirrors were facing.  Remove the mirror and voila!  No more pain.

Again, never have a mirror that faces those sleeping in the bed, even on the ceiling (sorry guys).  In fact, it is best to leave mirrors out of bedrooms altogether.

Mirrors in the Bathroom

Water is the dominant element in a bathroom.  Mirrors enhance your space and allow you to get a perspective on yourself.  We often look in the mirror to improve ourselves, right?  Well, we might as well improve every part we can.

Feng Shui Full Length Mirrors

Thus, I suggest a full-length mirror in the bathroom, such that its reflection does not cut off any parts of your body.

Mirrors in Bagua Areas

Some Bagua areas will benefit from mirrors more than others.  In particular, mirrors are good to use in the Career & Life Path Area (but not toward your front door), Family Area, and Wealth & Prosperity Corner.

Try to use corresponding colors, materials, and shapes for the mirror and its frame when possible.  For example, use a vertical rectangular mirror with a green and/or wooden frame in the Family Area.

Avoid using mirrors of any kind in your Fame & Reputation Area, as this will extinguish your fire element that is necessary here.

Best Practices

Placing a mirror at your front foyer toward your front door is bad because it pushes back all of the Chi entering your home, preventing it from energizing your house.

Avoid having mirrors that face each other.  This can create a barrier that will stop energy from flowing through your home.

Don’t overdo it with mirrors, especially all in one place.  Sometimes, less is more.

Replace chipped or cracked mirrors.  Relationships are negatively affected by broken mirrors.

Give children full-length mirrors to improve their self-esteem.

Unless your fireplace is in the Fame & Reputation Area of your home, you may want to douse it with figurative water.  Hang a mirror directly over your fireplace to neutralize its effects.

Adding some plants near a mirror will rejuvenate and enhance the flow of Chi energy through your surroundings.

Mirrors should always be framed around their edges.

Feng Shui Cul-de-Sac Cures

It is well-known that the Feng Shui for a cul-de-sac home is bad. Though I typically advise against living in such a home, I have figured out how to make lemonade out of lemons (or good Feng Shui out of bad, in this case).

Feng Shui Cul-de-Sac Sign

In years past, home builders could charge a premium for homes at the end of cul-de-sacs. With more buyers aware of Feng Shui, that is simply no longer the case.

Unaware buyers may covet a home on a cul-de-sac because it provides a larger lot and reduced drive-through traffic so that children can play. Unfortunately, many of those who have lived in a cul-de-sac home have paid the price in more ways than one.

Basic Feng Shui Advice

When possible, avoid cul-de-sac homes.  It’s really that simple.

When I work with home builders, I advise against site plans that include cul-de-sacs, especially in Feng Shui aware areas, because they typically have to reduce their price to sell the homes. Moreover, city planners avoid them because they promote a reliance on cars, as public transportation is more difficult to service these areas.

If you are looking at purchasing a home on a cul-de-sac, I would advise against it because the overwhelming energy you will experience is chaotic and stale.

But what if you already own and live in a cul-de-sac home?

Most of my clients living in cul-de-sac homes came to me experiencing problems making and keeping money and have had poor health. Fortunately, I solved their problems, just as I will for you.

Own a Cul-de-Sac Home?  Your Options

If you already live in a home on a cul-de-sac, you have essentially two Feng Shui options:

1. Sell the home, likely to someone who is not aware of Feng Shui.

2. Harness and transform the Feng Shui energy flowing to your home such that it can nourish you rather than deplete you.  This isn’t the easy option, but it is sometimes the only option given individual situations.

I am going to focus on the second option so that we can work on some cures to your cul-de-sac Feng Shui.

Negative Chi of Cul-de-Sacs

First, let’s talk about why cul-de-sac homes have such bad Feng Shui.

While any home on a cul-de-sac is bad Feng Shui, the homes in the red area get the fastest moving negative Chi.

While any home on a cul-de-sac is bad Feng Shui, the homes in the red area get the fastest moving negative Chi.

Think of a street like a river, where water flows down from a source. Chi (or Qi) is water’s equivalent, flowing down a street from its source toward your cul-de-sac. Chi is Feng Shui energy. Just like water, it can be clean and refreshing or dirty and unhealthy.

Water nourishes while it also erodes. It provides life-giving energy to plants while also slowly eating away at the banks of the river. Chi works in much the same way, as it provides life-giving energy to you in your home, it also erodes your Bagua over time.

As water flows to a dam, it churns chaotically and over time gets stale. Sediment collects, creating mud that grows like a cancer. So, too, does Chi as it flows to a cul-de-sac. While the energy is worst at the home at the end of the cul-de-sac, all of the surrounding homes must share dirty, chaotic and stale energy that erodes at their Baguas over time.

Energy that makes its way into your cul-de-sac home is not calm, refreshing energy that you need to kickstart the creative cycle of your Bagua. Instead, it is fast, chaotic, used up energy that needs to be slowed, regulated and refreshed.

Energy Transformation

If you intend to live in a home at a cul-de-sac (or a home on a T-intersection or dead end), improve its incoming Feng Shui energy much as you would regulate and filter dam water for drinking.

Start by slowing the energy coming at your home. Do this by utilizing landscaping effects such as tall shrubs, walls, fences or even sturdy posts near your front curb (this also helps prevent unsuspecting car drivers from ending up in your living room).

Next, add some water and wind features between the tall curbside landscaping and the doorway. Try utilizing a pond, pool, birdbath, or water fountain. Any calm water feature will do. You could also add a windmill or other moving garden elements. Adding these elements filters and refreshes your incoming Chi.

You can use Feng Shui to protect your home from negative energy by adding strong posts and refresh the energy with a water feature.

You can use Feng Shui to protect your home from negative energy by adding strong posts and refresh the energy with a water feature.

Now, create a winding pathway from the cul-de-sac to your front door that navigates its way through the landscaping effects at the curb and through your water or wind features to your doorway. This re-creates the calm flowing river effect, with your new filtration system working to slow and refresh the Chi.

Ensure that your doorway and the front of your home is well-lit. Depending on your home, you may want to paint your door a particular color. These steps attract positive Feng Shui energy.

As I suggest with T-intersection homes, try using a convex Bagua mirror at your doorway to bounce away any negative energy that sneaks through. It doesn’t need to be visible from outside.

Feng Shui Convex Bagua Mirror

Place your convex Bagua mirror above your door on the interior wall facing toward the street. Yes, you won’t actually see the mirror.

Lastly, make sure you have followed all of the steps to Feng Shui the inside of your home according to the Bagua. Doing so will ensure that your career, relationships, wealth, love, health and all other areas of importance are well-nourished by your newly-refreshed Chi.
